Background

Raphael Gottman was born June 5th, 1939, in a lifeboat off the cost of Florida. His parents were those among the Jewish refugees aboard the SS St. Louis. They jumped ship after being denied entry into both Cuba and the United States and smuggled themselves into the US, claiming their child was born on US soil to grant Raphael citizenship.

Although Raphael had a relatively pleasant and happy childhood, it was mostly sheltered and he had few friends while growing up. It was during his time in college when his powers fully manifested. Although the ability to heal was a wonderful gift, he felt it was dangerous and kept it hidden, not even using it to heal himself. Time went on but Raphael noticed that as all his friends and fellow students grew older he did not. Shortly before graduation he dropped out moved away, not knowing what else to do.

By the early 80s Raphael had lived in a dozen cities, attended additional colleges and worked odd jobs to pay the bills. All the while he did not age a day, appearing to be young man of 20. For a short time he became inspired to make use of his healing powers and was known for a short time as “Guardian Angel” in New York. As Guardian Angel he did not fight crime, but helped out in medical emergencies and with disaster relief. This only lasted for a year, when Raphael decided to abandon his short lived role as a super hero when the media started asking too many questions.

Eventually Raphael found himself in Paragon City working as an EMT to help out after the first Rikti war. By this time his time spent in various schools and vocations around the nation had earned him no degrees, but allowed him to become a jack-of-all-trades, including extensive knowledge of law, medicine, history and economics. He speaks 14 languages (though none with any particular skill except for English), has picked up a little fencing and tae kwon do, has mastered the art of juggling and the yo-yo and can solve a Rubik’s cube in less than two minutes.

Raphael was in college again during the second Rikti invasion. While the bombs fell upon Steel Canyon he watched as over a dozen heroes tried to beat back the invading aliens, and then watched as they began to fall one by one. Without a second though, Raphael found himself in the middle of the fray, bathing the heroes in a field of rejuvenating energy, healing them and giving then the strength to fight harder. The tide turned almost instantly, but quickly turned back again as the heavy assault units began to teleport in. Without realizing it had happened, Raphael had sprouted feathered wings and was flying from hero to hero keeping each alive throughout the battlefield. When it was finally over and the all clear was sounded, Raphael found himself in the middle of two dozen heroes all thanking him before running off to fend off the invaders in some other neighborhood.

One of the heroes asked if Raphael would join him and his allies continue the fight. Recognizing the good he was doing, and not knowing what else to do, he agreed. After the waves of invasions were over, his new friends asked if he would join them permanently. After thinking it over, Raphael agreed and became a member of Star Patrol.

Raphael maintains his secret idendity as a student at Paragon City University, having found a way to fully withdraw his wings. When not on official Star Patrol duty he can usually be found on campus in Steel Canyon or performing volunteer work at any of the local hospitals.

Tactics

Agent Raphael is the primary field physician for Star Patrol and works best in a full team. His healing and recovery abilities are usually all that is needed to keep his allies moving at full speed through any combat, and he further enhances this by fortifying weaker allies protecting them from being hindered or restrained. Although not highly damaging, Raphael can also produce blasts of radiation which hinder his foes, making them easy targets for his allies.
